5 Great Boat Cleaning Tips

By James Fletcher

Boats and salt water do not mix. Salt water causes corrosion that will rapidly eat into your wonderfuljet boat. Below are 5 tips to stop your beautiful boat becoming a rusted wreck.

1) Always wash immediately or as soon as possible after you have been in the water. Also be sure to use fresh water (not bore or underground water as this will cause staining). Spend a little bit of time cleaning your boat. If you rush it you will almost certainly miss spots which will cause premature rusting and corrosion to your boat.

2) Try using a soap attachment to your hose pipe. This helps in stopping corrosion by neutralizing the acid of the salt water.

3) Be sure to clean your trailer as well as your boat. Specifically target the back of the trailer where it is fully submersed in the water. Also be sure to water down the back of your car. Even if your car has not touched the water, if it is parked near the ocean for any period of time it will gradually get a salt build up occurring.

4) If ever waxing, start at an inconspicuous part of the boat. Wax can eat into the paintwork and make a great deal of mess so test your wax first on a small area to make sure this won't happen to you.

5) Remember to wash the inside of the boat as well. All gear should be washed down. Sensitive electronic gear and the like should be covered to avoid water penetrating into electronic components. Consider wiping these components down with a slightly wet rag.

Remember, salt water gets everywhere so take your time and be sure to properly clean your boat after every use.

Once you have decided on buying a boat you will need to think about where you are going to store it. If it is not possible to store at home then you will need to moor your vessel. There are several types of moorings available and these include a marina/harbour, boatyard, or a swinging mooring.

Modern yachts have efficient sail-plans, most notably the Bermuda rig, that allow them to sail towards the wind. This capability is the result of a sail-plan and hull design, typically a sloop rig, that utilizes Bernoulli's principle to generate lift.

Tropical Depression Four ( TD 4 ) and Disturbance 91L - Atlantic storms.

Mon, 13 Aug 2007 20:05:53 +0200
Tropical Depression Four (TD 4 ) a storm in the Atlantic - this was designated late this morning. It's moving to the west, and I expect this motion to continue for the next 72 hours. I feel the NHC has a good track forecast right now, based on what I've seen in the forecast steering currents as mentioned this morning. This could change as this reaches T.S. or Hurricane status. I will continue to monitor that and put out a forecast if needed regarding any possible change. All interests in the Leeward Islands, Caribbean Islands, and Puerto Rico should monitor the progress of this system closely.
